Snowy New Orleans... USEA Annual Meeting

by JOANIE

The USEA Annual meeting got underway on Wednesday, I arrived on Thursday after it snowed in New Orleans for the first time since 2004. I heard the reference made that hell froze over… it made me laugh as I had never been to New Orleans before and once I arrived it certainly didn’t seem like hell. It is a pretty cool place. I spent ages in Memphis on a place waiting for the New Orleans airport to open… they aren’t terribly equipped for snow.

When the pilot came over the loudspeaker and said, “We are going to give it a go.” Not always what you want to hear on an airplane – but we made it safely. We were the first flight to get in once the airport opened.

Others weren’t so lucky.

Jon and Jen Holling, Leslie and Lesley Law and a host of others spent the better part of the day in the Orlando airport. I heard there were some wheelchair races.

Boyd and Sylva Martin turned up  after going through Houston to get here from Pennsylvania. They did a little Prefontaine in the airport to make their connection. I did give them a little bit of a geography lesson about where Texas is in relation to Unionville and New Orleans.  From a team standpoint Boyd  just declared he would ride for the US. Our newest American,  made the switch from Australia as he and Sylva (who is a top dressage rider) are building a life and a business here. It is seriously good news for us.

On the ground in the Bayou, the Training Level Three-day Event came up in a number of different meetings that I was in, from Active Athletes to Competition Organizers. It is a very interesting discussion about how to execute it so that everyone gets the most out of it. Back in the last decade when I rode at the CCI level, I did a number of long format three days, I’m not sure returning to that is the solution, but steeplechase is pretty darn fun on a good horse. This sounds like it might be a good compromise.

We had a great dinner and a wander around last night, caught up with a bunch of people from a variety of parts of the country and had fun in New Orleans.

Which I feel like would be difficult not to do.

I woke up this morning and am currently sitting in “Solutions from Top Trainers” which is providing some interesting insight into a variety of things. Lucinda “the Legend” Green is making sure everyone is laughing. I had a long talk with Mark Phillips this morning and it sounds like he has some big plans for these guys.

Back to the Arctic

by JOANIE

Todd minikus didn't go gate-to-wire in Florida, it was all a bit confusing due to the nature of the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championship presented by Equine Motorcoach but Kent Farrigton won the class on crowd favorite Up Chiqui (who is so tiny he disapears out of view when he jumps into a combination) and likely secured his World Cup Final ticket in the process.

BUT...

Margie Engle, the legend herself, put in the most consistent performance over the two days to win her second National Show Jjumping Championship. This year, sponsored by Rolex and presented by Equine Motorcoach marked a decade since she won her first one.

Margie is a comedy show and always a very popular winner. She isn't sure if she will be going to the Rolex/FEI World Cup Final to jump or just to spectate and find trouble on the Strip in Las Vegas (rumor has it she plays a mean hand of cards...). She is rebuliding her string in 2009, as her top horses Hidden Creek's Quervo Gold is closer to the end of his career than the beginning. But she also has Pamina L and a couple of young horses she hopes are on track for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

I returned home at 1 am to the shock of having no heat in my house. That's not quite true, I had heat but, like a moron, I had turned it off instead of down. Not my most brilliant move.

It was 38 degrees.

So two dogs and myself piled onto the couch in front of the fire under every blanket in the house, for awhile it was too cold to sleep but by the morning morale had improved.

Tinseltown

by JOANIE

The glorious weather continued in Florida and event thought the show jumpers had the day off on Saturday, the Grand Prix dressage horses took to the international arena and put on an impressive display under the lights in the evening. The day consisted of an Active Athletes meeting and a nice dinner after the dressage at the Tavern of the Green across the pond from the horse show.

I'm currently waiting for the final to start. Lizzy Chesson and I chatted with the Equine Motorcoach people for awhile about some exciting things happening for them. they have the Motorcoach here for the entire season and it is 100% worth checking out. It is beautiful, and had comfort of both the horses and riders first and foremost.

I got out in time to watch some of the Amateur/Owner Jumping and the leadline class. One of the leadline ponies was dressed in tinsel.

Christmas in Florida is going to take some getting used to for me. Currently Rudolph is playing and I'm wearing a t-shirt... my New England roots are showing I guess, but there are a lot of Christmas lights adorning these palm trees.

More after the class, we will see if Todd Minikus can go gate to wire.

Show Jumping and Sunshine

by JOANIE

If I have to hear one more time that "You're from Massachusetts, you shouldn't be complaining about the cold." I just might scream. Just because I have been cold for a large percentage of my life doesn't mean I like it.

And it has gotten cold in Kentucky. Bitter cold at times

Enter trip to Florida for the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Championships presented by Equine Motorcoach. Not only is the weather glorious, the jumping is proving to be pretty impressive as well.

We heard rumblings all week that the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center was a construction zone, wasn't going to be ready, etc. I think we all breathed a collective sigh of relief when we arrived for the Holiday and Horses Show, despite not being completely done, the renovations were well under control and the place was looking great. Hundreds of people had been employed to work around the clock, tirelessly getting the venue ready. They have put in some more permanent facilities, poured some concrete in certain places, the bridge over the in-gate is new, and the VIP tent now has tables down in between the arena and the tent. We sat out there, and it was perfect for the occasion.

The International Arena was in great shape, the footing looked as good as last year and when I arrived in the afternoon, the course was coming together. We had some meetings in the afternoon as there is a lot taking shape at the USEF, the finishing touches on the facilities were happening around us, the changes we were witnessing were amazing. This was a great opportunity, since so many of the great minds in the sport were around, to pick some brains and get some ideas.

I'm staying with a friend in Del Ray, I've known Melissa since 2006, when I met her in Saratoga. She's an assistant trainer on the racetrack and because she mostly lives in NY and Florida I don't see her very often. I drove down to her house caught up for a bit and then headed back up 95 to catch the first horse in the ring for the first leg of the final USEF National Championship of 2008.

The first couple horses handled the course with relative ease and then Todd Minikus, who is a brand new Dad - Colt was born six weeks ago, blazed around the course with Pavarotti. His time looked good but with 40 more horses in the class, it wasn't clear that his speedy time would hold up. A number of riders gave him a serious run for his money, including Hillary Dobbs, who went right after Todd, and ended up second, but the new Dad prevailed.

Todd, who is always a lively interview said he was only showing this week because he needed money for diapers and that he was ready for a break. These guys have had a really long season and after this weekend will have a bit of time off before it all gets going again.

But Todd was kidding about the diapers... I think.

It was great to catch up with people I haven't see since the summer, this year has been a bit of a whirlwind and since the  Olympic Games it has all been a bit of a blur so it is nice to take a breath and see people in a less intense environment.

I got a text this morning that it is snowing in Kentucky... sorry guys.
