A Day in the Life of Rainbow Canyon (aka Lewis)

by Club Equestrian Blogger

Rainbow Canyon of Wild Sky Farm in Burbank, CA, is a grey Welsh pony gelding. He stands 12.2-hands and is 10 years old. His registered name is Red Drum Trystan B.

My day starts pretty early on show days with the braider, Karin Binz, coming into my house and waking me up from a deep slumber.  I wonder why I have to get up when it’s still dark. I guess I will never know.  I greet Karin with my ears up hoping for a treat, she usually just pats me and tells me I have to be still while she braids my mane. I stretch out and that makes me feel good, then the torture begins as she takes my beautiful hair and ties it in little tiny knots.

My breakfast arrives, usually a half flake of hay and if I’m lucky a handful of A & M; I could eat a lot more! After I’m done eating I sift through every piece of shavings in my stall looking for leftovers.  My groom, Carlos, will take me for a two-minute lounge so I can run and buck a little, then walk me around so I can see the sights and say hi to some of my friends!

Later in the day I am brushed and pampered and tacked up, oh and my favorite part is when my feet get polished!  I get walked down to the ring and see my trainer, Archie Cox. He always smiles at me, and I know it’s going to be a good day.

My rider, either Tara Spencer or Skylar Nelson, find me and climb aboard. We do a little tour of the schooling ring, which is always fun because I love to go around and look at everything. We jump a few jumps, then I’m ready to go to the show ring. I love going around the course and jumping all the jumps just so. It’s the best feeling, then I get big pats from rider and trainer and then I usually get a cookie or two.

When I’m all done showing I get to go back to the barn where they take the knots out of my hair. I get a quick shower and get to go for some grass, then I go back to my house and eat some more treats.  I like apples, carrots and cookies and usually I get them all!!!

Macy Grey Q and A

by Club Equestrian Blogger

Macy Grey of Wild Sky Farm in Burbank, CA, stopped to share some insights into his experience at the 2009 United States Equestrian Federation Pony Finals National Championships. Macy Grey is a 13.2-hand 10-year-old grey Welsh pony mare. She was the USEF Horse of the Year National Champion in Green Pony Hunter-Medium in 2005.

How was your trip, and how long did it take?
The trip was okay. I took a one-hour van ride in the middle of the night (about 2 a.m.) from my home in Los Angeles to the Ontario Airport. We waited there for a while then got on the plane and that was a five-hour flight. Altogether it probably took up half of my day.

Did you drive or fly? Did your luggage arrive too?
I flew in a really big plane with some of my friends. My tack trunks and my groom came with me and it looks like everything arrived okay.

How did you pass the time on the trip?
I ate some hay and talked to my friend to the left of me, and the horse to the right of me kept butting in.

Was the food good on the trip?
The food was great!!!  It tasted a little bit different than what I normally get, but something different every now and then is good!

Which “Fall” shows will you be showing at, and in what classes?
I show in the Medium Pony Hunters and I heard my trainer, Archie Cox, say that I would be showing at the Capital Challenge, the Pennsylvania National, and the Washington International.

How did you prepare for the show?
I get lots of rest and eat a lot, then I will get my hair cut!

Are you looking forward to catching up with your horse/pony friends?
Oh yes! I am looking forward to seeing my friends from other barns and my old trainers, too.

In your spare time do you get to shop, do fun things (what things), sightsee?
In my spare time I love to go on trail rides with my person, Skylar Nelson--we go all over!! Then she will take me out for grass and that’s always fun!!

Is there anyone special in your life that you would like to mention?
Well aside from my person, Skylar, there is Archie Cox and Teddi Mellencamp, my groom Carlos Soriano, and Sammy. I also have a special pony friend, but I would never kiss and tell.
