  Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - The 2010 Kentucky Spring Premier Horse Show is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, through Friday, April 16, and includes significant changes from the previous year's show.
  
  In particular, the show has been moved to the new state-of-the-art indoor facility at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, the same arena in which parts of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games are set to be held later this year. The new arena, footing and stabling are expected to enhance the experience of the participants and their horses. Other changes will include an adjusted competition date to avoid conflicts with the Kentucky Derby, and the addition of new breed sections.
  
  The three-day full schedule includes a wide range of performance classes for Saddlebreds, Hackneys, and Road Horses. New breed divisions added for the 2010 show comprise of Morgans, National Show Horses, Arabians and Half-Arabians Arabians, and Modern Shetlands. Exhibitions will also be offered featuring the Miniature Horse. And, for equitation enthusiasts, the event will host a USEF Saddle Seat Medal qualifier, the National Horse Show Good Hands Class, UPHA Challenge Cup, and Walk/Trot Challenge Cup.

  Am I Blue +/ Named Arabian Horse Association Distance Horse of the Year for 2009

  Wednesday, March 03, 2010 - The Arabian Horse Association (AHA) announced Am I Blue+/ (Red Wings Royalty x Petrovna), owned by Louise and Bruce Burton of Okmulgee, OK, as the 2009 Distance Horse of the Year. The notable award recognizes an Arabian or Half-Arabian with significant accomplishments in distance riding sports. Am I Blue, known as “Ducky,” topped off an excellent year with a championship at the AHA National Championship 100-Mile Endurance Ride in the Half-Arabian division, on October 27 in Stillwater, OK. Ducky and Burton finished the 100-mile ride in 11 hours.
  
  Each time a horse is named the Distance Horse of the Year, its name is added to a perpetual bronze sculpture trophy designed by Joe Staheli that is displayed at the AHA office in Aurora, CO.
  
  Plagued by injury and lameness for almost three years after Burton bought the mare, Ducky’s partnership with Burton began bumpy. After a few adjustments were made to Ducky’s pace and gait, Burton and Ducky began to thrive, and the pair earned the championship spot at the Region 9 Endurance Championship in 2008 and then again in 2009.
  
  “Mike Beasley told me I needed to canter more and trot less,” said Burton. As Ducky’s pace quickened, she often awarded the Best Conditioned with a 15 pulse, which made Burton realize the mare could handle a 100-mile ride and produce winning times.
  
  According to Burton, the 1998 16-hand Half-Arabian mare, out of a straight Russian dam and a Saddlebred sire, experienced her best moment on a race to the finish line this year. “A guy decided to race us the last ¼ mile to beat us at a ride in Texas last spring. I didn’t want to race in, but Duck would have none of it. She would not let that horse pass! That was the first time she discovered she could really run! I never could get her to run flat out before that,” said Burton. “She is a dream to ride. Duck loves nothing better than to go down the trail.”

  Thursday, February 25, 2010 - One More Round++// (Al Jassur Laddin x Winifred), owned by Bill and Alexis Doughty of Cape Charles, VA, was named the 2009 Arabian Horse Association (AHA) High Point Horse of the Year. The 2004 bay gelding earned 467 points in 2009 by competing in over 200 classes at 20 shows.
  
  The rigorous show schedule, which was carefully balanced with rest time, began in January and ended in September at the Sport Horse Nationals Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show, where One More Round earned the championship title in Half-Arabian/Anglo-Arabian Sport Horse Under Saddle AT, two reserve championships and seven Top 10s.
  
  “My husband shows him in-hand and, I ride him,” said Alexis Doughty, who earned the Adult Amateur of the Year award with the help of One More Round and trainer Ben Flynn. “We took One More Round to about two shows a month and gave him about six weeks off before preparing him for Sport Horse Nationals about a week before leaving for Lexington,” said Doughty.
  
  One More Round seems to like the attention he receives at shows and likes to be at the center of things. “He loves attention. He gets in more trouble when things aren’t focused on him. He’s totally a prankster,” said Doughty, recalling how the gelding will pull blankets off his pasture-mates. “He’s like Dennis the Menace. He’ll school perfect and then go in the ring and chew on my husband’s arm.”
  
  The six-year-old gelding is only in his second year of showing and has a bright future ahead of him. Bred by Doughty at her Bayview Farms in Cape Charles, she’s excited to see how far One More Round will go, especially in working hunter, his favorite. “I think he’s got a lot more to do. He’s ready to move up, and I hope that people see a lot more of him,” said Doughty.
  
  The top ten point-earners from the Achievement Awards program receive an embroidered cooler from Schneiders Saddlery. Doughty will also receive a $1,500 gift certificate from Schneider Saddlery and a Montana Silversmith belt buckle.

  Doughty and Driediger Highest Amateur Point Earners in 2009 for the Arabian Horse Association

  Thursday, February 25, 2010 - Alexis Starer Doughty of Cape Charles, VA, and Conley Driediger of Yarrow, BC, Canada, were named the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) Adult and Youth Amateurs of 2009, respectively. Doughty earned an impressive 646 points at 22 AHA-recognized shows in 2009, while Driediger earned a whopping 485.5 points from 17 shows. The AHA Amateur Achievement Award program began in 2002 and tracks the points of individual adult and youth amateur riders, handlers, and drivers over the course of a year.
  
  In 2008, Doughty made an appearance as one of the top 10 point-earners, coming in at sixth place with 205.5 points. Earning more than triple that amount of points in 2009, Doughty says she didn’t set out with a goal to earn nearly 650 points but credits her success, in part, to her location. “We sit in a great place here in Virginia. We can hit several different regional shows—Region 15, 16, 12 and 14 are all fairly close,” said Doughty.
  
  While Doughty rode several horses during the year, her main point-earner was One More Round++// (Al Jassur Laddin x Winifred), a 2004 bay Anglo-Arabian that earned AHA’s High-Point Horse of the Year Award. With the help of trainer Ben Flynn and husband Bill, Doughty earned her first National Championship at Sport Horse Nationals with One More Round. “That was my first and only national championship, and since we bred him...that was a special win,” she said.
  
  Doughty plans to keep her amateur status and continue showing for the fun of it. “My husband and I own a company together that we do for full-time work, so we spend most of our vacation and travel time at horse shows...it’s a lot of fun to show and travel together,” added Doughty. “I’ve been riding so long, I want horses to remain my passion and not make them my profession.”
  
  Conley Driediger, the Youth Amateur Award winner, enjoyed a fantastic 2009 that included winning Equine Canada’s Junior Equestrian of the Year. The 17-year-old showed two geldings, C Sir Madre++++// (Psymadre x C Fahleen) and Winning Afire+// (Afire Bey V x Win Me Ribbons), in six classes, including hunter pleasure, country English pleasure, show hack, halter, sport horse in-hand and sport horse under saddle.
  
  Driediger chalks her point-earning potential up to “working hard, consistency and independence. I ride both of my show horses five days a week, and my mom is glad that she doesn't need to baby-sit me at shows or at home. I clip, sand and bathe the horses before the show, and I can tack up my horse, do an ultra good job that rivals the best, tie my own tie, and make it to my class on time looking sharp at the shows.”
  
  At only 17, Driediger already holds a deep appreciation for the Arabian breed. “I like how diverse, sensitive, and tolerant they are...we fuss and fix until they look like perfection, and they don't complain. Sometimes I actually think they like it, and I am often amazed, from my own experiences with Madre and Cade, how hard-working Arabians can be. They are incredibly intelligent and far more sensitive than other breeds, and they can do pretty much anything. What's not to love?”
  
  The top ten point-earners from the Achievement Awards program receive a screen printed, three-ring binder briefcase from Schneiders Saddlery. In addition to the briefcase, Doughty will receive a $1,500 gift certificate from Schneiders Saddlery, a Montana Silversmith belt buckle and a Top Ten briefcase.   Thursday, February 11, 2010 - Lexington, KY – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) will be represented by two endurance riders at the 2010 Abu Dhabi Al Wathba President’s Cup in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. This prestigious 160 km race is one of the premier events on the international endurance circuit and takes place on February 13, 2010. Riding for the US will be: Ellyn Rapp on Belshazzar and Jeremy Reynolds on Sir Smith.
  
  Rapp was recently second in deluge conditions at the 2009 Kentucky Cup – which served as the test event for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park. She can expect totally different circumstances in Abu Dhabi where the forecast calls for temperatures in the 70s and dry conditions on race day.
  
  Reynolds will ride Sir Smith, an experienced endurance veteran in the United Arab Emirates. Reynolds is also a farrier and is married to fellow endurance rider Heather Reynolds – who has also represented the United States in international competition. Sir Smith has two FEI wins on his record already and looks to add to this tally in Abu Dhabi.

  Homeless Arabian Horses Find a New Home and a New Purpose

  Tuesday, January 05, 2010 - "Why did gorgeous horses like those need new homes?" is a question frequently asked by disbelieving park visitors about the stunning black Arabian horses that recently arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park.
  
  An Arabian stallion and mare came to the park through a partnership with the Kentucky Equine Humane Center (KyEHC) and will soon go to work promoting the park's next international blockbuster exhibition, the $2.35 million "A Gift from the Desert: The Art, History and Culture of the Arabian Horse," which will be open May 29-Oct 15 in the International Museum of the Horse. The horses will also be used to promote the new multi-million dollar Arabian Horse Galleries wing of the museum, which will open this spring, and in the park's daily Parade of Breeds show.
  
  The previous owners of the horses were no longer able to care for them, and contacted the KyEHC, which then contacted the Kentucky Horse Park. The KyEHC is a 72-acre facility located in central Kentucky which is a model shelter for equines from across the state. No horse in need of shelter is ever turned away, regardless of breed or mix of breed. A partnership between the park and the KyEHC was formed last October to assist some of the injured and unwanted horses coming into the Humane Center.
  
  John Nicholson, Executive Director of the park, stated, "Part of our mission at the Kentucky Horse Park is to educate the public about the horse and man's relationship to it. We are living in a time when that dynamic relationship is under tremendous stress due to economic challenges facing horse owners. The travesty of this crisis is that thousands of good horses are coming to the end of the line prematurely and will never reach the fullness of their life's purpose unless more people get involved in their rescue.
  
  "I am so proud that the Kentucky Horse Park and the Kentucky Equine Humane Center are on the redemption side of this story as we continue to invent ways to save horses' lives and give them enjoyable jobs that will enlighten and thrill literally hundreds of thousands of park visitors."
  
  Kathy Hopkins, Equine Director for the park, said, "Black horses are not all that common, so when the Humane Center contacted us about these exquisite, well-trained, black Arabian horses who needed new homes, we immediately agreed to take them. As we share their stories with our visitors, we will have a perfect opportunity to help the public understand the importance of supporting equine welfare efforts."
  
  Lori Neagle, Executive Director of the KyEHC, observed, "Our partnership with the Kentucky Horse Park has already exceeded our expectations in terms of the number of at-risk horses that we have been able to assist. These horses will also be great ambassadors for their breed and for equine adoption for years to come."
  
  Nicholson concluded, "The Arabian horse has been highly prized by many cultures throughout history, but in spite of that, like so many other breeds, scores of them are fighting for survival in perilous situations.   Thursday, December 31, 2009 - The deadline for submission of applications for the 2010 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team Selection has been extended to January 15, 2010. Applications are available online for riders interested in pursuing an opportunity to qualify for the teams that will represent the United States at the 2010 International Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup event, to be held October 6-8, 2010, at the Kentucky Fall Classic Horse Show in Shelbyville, KY.
  
  In addition, the Saddle Seat World Cup will be a featured part of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Equine Village at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Riders from the U.S. teams as well as members of the visiting International Saddle Seat World Cup teams will have the opportunity to participate in the prestigious WEG Equine Village.
  
  “We are extremely excited about 2010. We’re looking forward to hosting a first-rate competition in Shelbyville, but we’re even more proud that we have the chance to be featured in the World Equestrian Games at the Equine Village in Lexington. This will be the opportunity that we’ve been waiting for, to show the world how incredible our athletes and our horses are,” said Ellen Beard, Executive Director of the organization. “The U.S. Team Selection Trials will be the beginning of what we know will be a very exciting year for us, as we select the team we hope will return the Gold medals and the World Cup trophies to the USA.”
  
  Riders from all Saddle Seat breeds are strongly encouraged to apply for the 2010 teams, each of which consists of five team members and an alternate. The purpose of the Saddle Seat World Cup is to promote the discipline of saddle seat equitation on an international level. The diverse breed affiliations involved in saddle seat equitation in the United States create the unique opportunity to draw from an expanded pool of top riders. Horses from the Saddlebred, Morgan, Arabian and National Show Horse breeds will be used in the competition.
  
  A total of 20 finalists will compete to become one of five team members or an alternate for the U.S. three-gaited team. Up to 12 finalists will have earned their bids to the trials by winning one of several designated qualifying finals or by virtue of a breed association nomination. In addition, 10 finalists will compete for the honors of five-gaited team membership. Two automatic bids for this team will be extended to the winners of designated five-gaited equitation events while the remaining eight finalists are chosen from a pool of applicants.
  
  The remaining finalists for the three-gaited team will be chosen from a pool of applicants. In the event of multiple finals wins or declined automatic bids, remaining finalist slots will be selected from the pool of eligible applicants. Riders may apply for both the three- and five-gaited teams but must submit separate application materials and fees for each team. In addition, in the event a rider qualifies for both teams, they may only represent the U.S. on one team.

Deadline for receipt of completed application packets is 9 p.m. EST on January 15, 2010. Interested applicants must submit completed applications, a $150 non-refundable application fee (per team), a brief essay, letters of reference, DVD or video, and two photographs. Applicants must be 14 years of age on January 1, 2010, but there is no maximum age for applicants. In addition, all riders must maintain current amateur certification with the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to be eligible.
  
  The U.S. Team Selection Trials are slated for March 26-28, 2010, on the campus of William Woods University in Fulton, MO. William Woods graciously provides the horses used for the trials, which is designed to prepare riders for the atmosphere of the international event. The Team Selection Trials will consist of two days of competition during which riders will complete two rail sessions, two individual patterns and one personal interview. Scoring will be equally weighted among the riding portions to total 90%, while the interview will account for the remaining 10% of each rider’s total score. Teams will be announced on the final day of the trials.

  2009 Performance Horse Registry’s Silver Stirrup Champions Announced

  Wednesday, December 30, 2009 - The final shows have been posted and the 2009 Performance Horse Registry’s (PHR) Silver Stirrup Award winners have been announced. One of the Hunter winners include Krishna Buyalos’s beautiful two-year-old filly, Outstanding. This bay filly is by Popeye K and out of Delilah. She was bred in California by Leslie Nelson. She is the winner of the Hunter Breeding Award. The Anglo-Trakehner gelding Unbelievable (Zarr x Rhapsody II) took home the award for the best Green Working Hunter.
  
  The Jumper category seems to be a carbon copy of last season. John and Barbara Bartko’s uber-talented grand prix winner Tarco Van Ter Moude took home top honors again in the High-Point Jumper category. This gelded son by Darco and out of the mare Pleiade de Revel won in excess of $200,000 in the jumper ring for 2009. Salamander Farm’s La Martinee (Landclassic x Landelfe) was the Amateur Owner Jumper of the Year for the third consecutive year.
  
  In-Hand Dressage was very competitive this year. The Dressage Sport Horse Breeding (DSHB) winner was Lisa and Jessica Dworkin’s Days Go By. Their homebred yearling is sired by Danone out of a former Silver Stirrup In-Hand Champion mare, Zejaluna (by Palmenhain). Karen Brame’s homebred Royalander (Royal Prince x Accolades) took home the DSHB Materiale award and Jessica Jenkin’s Andorra La Vella (Amethyst x Impressive Cowgirl) won the DSHB Mature Horse of the Year award.
  
  Dressage continues to be very popular with PHR-registered horses. The 2009 season was very competitive and some of the standouts include: Janne Rumbough’s homebred Winnie Too (Gaucho III x Kristina); Kenneth Borden, Jr’s homebred Rashka (Raymeister x Tashika); Kai Handt’s NTEC Donar (D’Olympic x Dukoscha), and Lisa Froehlig’s Welfenprinz (Weltmeyer x Prioschka). One winner, Rose Noir 2, had a very memorable year. Her owner, Mary-Cameron Rollins, rode the beautiful black daughter of Royal Angelo I out of Ironesse to an Individual Gold Medal at the Adequan FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships. She was also the winner of the 2009 Silver Stirrup FEI Junior/Young Rider of the Year Award.
  
  Eventing grew in 2009 as the popular Beginner Novice division was added as a championship level for Silver Stirrup-nominated horses. The inaugural winner of this division was Ashley Guidry and her bay mare Mercedes (Makuba x Madeara). Deanna Hertrich of Salem, WI, was the Novice Champion with her Thoroughbred gelding, St George (Our Native x Best Game). The Advanced Champion for 2009 is Jessica Ransehousen’s Oldenburg gelding, Critical Decision. This bay son of Consul and out of the mare Two Days Tor was bred in Pennsylvania by Judy Reggio. Accompanied by his rider Melissa Ransehousen, Critical Decision was an entry in the 2009 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Four-Star Event.
  
  The National Champion and Reserve Champion winners will be recognized for their success at the USEF Annual Meeting in January. The Silver Stirrup Awards banquet will be held on Thursday, January 14, at 6:30 p.m. EST. The meeting will be held at the Marriott Downtown in Louisville, KY.   During the Silver Stirrup Awards, the PHR/USEF Leading Owner, Breeder, and Sires of the Year are also recognized.
