About This Event
The first Kentucky State Fair was held in 1902 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. Picture a vast parking lot filled—not with the latest in automobiles, pickups and SUVs—but with horse-drawn vehicles. And, there was no such thing as a horse van. Some horses actually traveled by foot [overnight stops along the way had stalls for horses and rooms for their people]. Some were hauled in horse-drawn wagons. Others came by train. There were no lighted arenas—all classes took place during daylight hours. Winners received a sterling silver trophy, no cash.
