I definitely want a Shetland, especially if having one means I could ride around in one of the mini buggies.

My first pony was a Shetland - she was my 3rd birthday present. She had been a little plow pony and was an absolute pistol.  She was the best friend I could have ever had through - she stood so patiently in the cross ties while I brushed and brushed her, drapped towels all over, braided her mane and forelock, attempted to clean her stall. She was my "babysitter" at all the shows we traveled to. She could be on the rotten side when ridden (what pony isnt'?) - she bucked me off for the first time when I was 3, and it was a nasty buck -- instead of crying when I landed, I jumped up, stormed over to her and kicked dirt at her foot and screamed "I hate you, you stupid pony!" .... my dad quietly said "you need to get back on" and I told him I was really mad at her - I'm sure he was trying so hard not to laugh, but he said he knew then that I was meant to ride since I had just endured nasty fall at 3 years old and it didn't phase me and I got back on and continued riding despite being mad at her :) I loved her dearly ... she just passed away a couple of years ago at the age of 33. When I got too old and big for her, we "leased" her out to a family and she continued the traidtion of bringing up horsey kids - she pulled the same tricks with them and was just as much as a pistol... I went regularly to visit her all through the years up until she passed away. She holds such a special place in my heart.

What a great story. You must have been one tough rider.

Your story reminded me of my best friend from childhood and her buckskin, who was appropriately named Buck. We were about six or seven and her parents were leading her around on Buck, when Buck bucked her off. Maybe it wasn't the buckskin color he was named for. Anyway, they wanted to end the day with that, but I hadn't ridden yet. I was still ready to get on and ride. That's how horse crazy I was. The weird part is that my memory fails me at this point and I don't remember if they let me on or not.

I think the really horse crazy kids always find a way and are always determined to ride regardless of what they're riding - that's what eventually makes them great riders and horse people! I like the name Buck .... it must have been one of those names that had several meanings behind it! :)
