Would love to know how many in the equine industry own a treadmill and what kind.  What is your opinion?  What do you see as the benefits of owning a treadmill and what are the cons? Let me know.

I don't own a treadmill, but I have done some reading on them. Here are some advantages:

  • The ability to exercise a horse without being ridden, especially during winter or bad weather.
  • Treadmill training can be better than lunging because lunging puts so much stress on the joints as a horse traverses a small circle.
  • It can add variety to a training program.
  • Treadmills have a consistent surface for the horse, reducing the risk of injury.
  • The handler can easily control the training by controlling the speed, incline, etc.
  • You can also monitor a horse easily by using a heart rate monitor or other devices to measure his health and soundness. Vets will use treadmills while endoscoping a horse to see how the horse's airways function during exercise. You can see the effects of shoeing, try to detect lameness, etc.

Some disadvantages include:

  • They can be pricey...at least $15,000 for low-speed treadmills. High-speed treatmills can get up to $50,000 or more, but will give you more to work with. You would have to check the various companies for exact pricing.
  • You will have to accustom the horse to the treadmill.
  • Boredom. You will have to vary the routine a little to keep the horse from being bored.

If you're interested in treadmills, you might want to see if any local farms in your area have a treadmill. The most likely ones might be a rehab facility, or maybe even a veterinary clinic. People at these facilities could give you more information and perhaps some training in how best to use one and more insight into their experiences.

Good luck. I'd love to hear if you get one and how it works out.

Ha! This is so funny! When I first read the question, I had no idea we were discussing treadmills for horses! But why not? My sister-in-law has one for her barrel racer, for use during the winter months in Washington state. I haven't heard how she likes it, hopefully it isn't gathering dust in the corner somewhere.

"galloping_on" makes some good points.

As far as a treadmill for people, I could think of several advantages for a horse person;

If we expect our horses to be athletes, we should be too. Keep in shape by using the darn thing instead of "conveniently storing it under your bed."

It could double as a saddle rack if it doesn't fit under your bed.

It will eat less than an average warmblood and won't need new shoes every 6 to 8 weeks.

No barn duty chores.

Disadvantages:

You can't take it on a trail ride unless you bring your husband along to help lug it up the hills.

No warm nickers when you walk into the room.

Apples get stuck in the track.
