About Me
Native Californian Gary Mullen is Associate Professor and Division Chair of the Equestrian Studies Department at William Woods University in Fulton, MO. He earned his BS and MS degrees from the equine science departments at Cal Poly University and Colorado State University, respectively. He was the first rider to show one of the famous Kellogg Arabians at the Arabian National Championships, winning the hunter class. His first position in the equine industry was as Equine Studies Director at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He spent 25 years in private school administration and instruction while running his own successful horse training operation.
Gary grew up in a family of hunter/jumper trainers (sister Janet McDonald and brother, the late Mark Mullen). Since the year 2000, he specialized in the training and showing of Andalusian and Friesian horses. From 2001-2005, he trained over 40 National Champion Andalusians. He was the recipient of the 2005 International Andalusian Horse Association’s award for the Professional Horseman of the Year. He is also a former nterscholastic Equestrian League (IEL) Trainer of the Year.
Gary is a licensed judge for Andalusians and Friesians with the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and has cards with many other organizations. He has judged horses in open competitions in all disciplines for over 30 years. He is also a certified therapeutic riding instructor with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), and he spearheaded the formation of the new therapeutic riding instructor concentration at William Woods University.
